At Wyoming Valley Health Care System, only board-certified radiologists and certified technologists provide your imaging needs. Under all circumstances, you can be assured of receiving outstanding and compassionate diagnoses and treatment from these experts.

Our Imaging Services department offers extensive diagnostic and testing capabilities in radiology, interventional radiology, CT scans, mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Dexascans and nuclear medicine. Each one of these highly advanced services offers fast, accurate diagnosis and treatment for all kinds of conditions.

Importantly, all three of our MRI units - including the MRI in the IMRIS operating suite at the Center for Advanced Surgery, the MRI at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital's Imaging Services Department and our MRI at the Thomas P. Saxton Medical Pavilion - are fully accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR also awarded accreditation to our ultrasound service - and our vascular ultrasound holds an eight-year accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories. Additionally, all of our CT scan units, nuclear medicine units (including PET and CT services) and mammography units are fully ACR accredited. In all, accreditation means our Imaging Services have met or exceeded high practice standards and peer review that reflects exceptional quality technology and professional talent.

• IMRIS Interoperative MRI – Simply put, it is among the most advanced technology in the world. In fact, it was the first dual-use interoperative MRI in the world when it was installed in 2006 and it remains on the leading edge of imaging and neurosurgery technology. The IMRIS enables neurosurgeons to conduct MRIs in the operating suite during surgery without having to move the patient. It also acts as an advanced large-bore traditional MRI when necessary. • Digital mammography – It’s far better than a traditional mammogram in that it’s faster, more comfortable, clearer, uses less radiation and offers computer aided detection that is simply not possible with traditional mammography. • Breast MRI – Bi-lateral breast MRI is the ‘gold standard’ in breast diagnostic testing – and it’s available only at our Women's Imaging Center. It’s faster because it scans both breasts at the same time, and it’s more accurate thanks to enhanced resolution technology. • Mammotome Breast Biopsy System – for minimally invasive breast biopsies without surgery.
  
  
• 4D Ultrasound – Our new GE Voluson 730-4D system is simply the finest ultrasound system available. There are only some 200 worldwide! Our experts use it to see remarkably clear and detailed real-time images of virtually any internal organ or tissue.
  
  
• Maternal-Fetal Medicine – This OB/GYN sub-specialty is also known as perinatology and provides specialized care in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring for expecting mothers who may be considered ‘high risk.’ Learn more at the Women's Imaging Center.
  
  
• Advanced MRI – Offering the largest possible opening (70cm), it is comfortable for even the largest patients. It's also significantly shorter than other MRIs, so the patient's head can remain outside the machine for about 60 percent of all tests. Most importantly, our MRI produces the absolute clearest images possible – far better than images produced by weaker open MRI machines.
  
  
• SPECT/CT – Unprecedented. That's the only way to describe the capabilities of our new SPECT/CT imaging system. By combining nuclear medicine and CT technologies, our physicians can now see disease in its earliest stages, far earlier than with traditional CT alone. That means even better chances for successful treatment.
  
  
• 64-Slice Scanner – This scanner is the most advanced CT system available anywhere – enabling clinicians to take images of the heart and coronary vessels. And it takes just five or six seconds! That means our cardiologists can spot heart abnormalities and blockages faster and without the need for an invasive cardiac catheterization.
  
  
• Biplane Scanner – A faster more comfortable way to produce dye-injection tests for angiograms and neuroradiology.
  
  
Thanks to biplane technology, our experts can: produce clearer, more enhanced images with only one test – when traditional dye injection testing would require two or more; assess possible abnormalities more quickly and efficiently; reduce testing time and radiation dosage; provide a comfortable and fast procedure.


• Dexascan – a quick, painless test for early diagnosis of osteoporosis.
  
  
• Interventional Radiology – such as advanced percuteneous vertebroplasty, used to treat osteoporosis-related spinal fractures.
  
  
Our team of Interventional Radiologists recently made the transition from film-based to digital technology. This means: better image quality; lower radiation dose; higher level of patient and referring physician satisfaction; efficient image sharing within Wyoming Valley Health Care System's digital network and outside to referring physicians when combined with PACs; no waiting for an appointment; improved patient care.
